Walk through a gold rush town frozen in time
Maldon holds one of the best-preserved 19th-century streetscapes left from Australia's gold rush, with building methods you won't find in many other places. Wander the main street and the lanes behind it to spot old mine workings and diggings that hint at life in a 19th-century mining town.

An afternoon of browsing, done properly
Maldon's shopfronts hide some of the best small-scale shopping in regional Victoria — think clothing and footwear boutiques, an old-fashioned general store, a much-loved lolly shop, and a fudge and ice-cream parlour for when the walking works up an appetite.
- One of Australia's best heritage linen shops
- A shop dedicated entirely to teddy bears
- Antiques and collectibles fitting for a heritage town
Reservoirs, fairways and lookout trails
Ten kilometres west of town, the local reservoir has boat ramps, picnic spots and good fishing, and turns into a hub for swimmers, sailors and water-skiers over summer. Birdwatchers can spend an easy hour scanning the shoreline for something new.
Golfers have four courses within easy reach, with more again around Maryborough and greater Bendigo — plenty of room for a friendly social round. For walkers and mountain bikers, tracks lead up to the summit lookout for a full 365° view over the district; ask at the motel or the Maldon Visitor Centre for trail notes.
A taste of the goldfields
Local wineries, orchards and district hotels and restaurants all put regional produce front and centre. If you time your visit right, the local markets are worth building a morning around:
- Wesley Hill Community Market (Chewton)Every Saturday, 7:30am – 1:00pm
- Castlemaine Farmers' MarketFirst Sunday of the month, 9:00am – 1:00pm
- Maldon MarketSecond Sunday of the month, 9:00am – 2:00pm
A creative community with deep roots
Central Victoria has one of the largest concentrations of working artists in the state, and Maldon has the studios, shops and events to show for it — including the Easter Art Walk, the biennial "Marchies" portrait competition, and the Annual Maldon Art Show.
Music and theatre matter here too, with regular performances at the local hotels and the annual Maldon Folk Festival held over the long weekend before the Melbourne Cup.
There's almost always something on
Between the Maldon Folk Festival, the Maldon Shopping Spree, the Easter Fair, the All British Rally, Maldon in Winter, the Antiques and Collectables Weekend, the Townwide Garage Sale, the Swap Meet, the Mount Tarrengower Historic Hill Climb and Downhill, the Annual Camp Draft, and the Twilight Dinner Festival — there's rarely a quiet month on the calendar.
